8th grade (1967-1968)

Eighth grade - THE BIG year for the military in the middle school. I wound up as staff sergeant on Major Doug Ross' staff. Scott Spier was the Captain Adjutant. The great thing about that position was that I didn't have to do any specific drills which anyone assigned to a company or the band had to do.

8th grade teachers - Bart Harrison, English; Fritz Maisel, Science; Chip Giardina, Algebra I

Notable events: The snack bar (Brass Eagle) opened.

New boarders in 8th grade: Melvin "Joe" Hoffman; Frank Zanti; Jim "Shorty" Long; Hugh Wilde; Jerry Landsman

8th grade was huge for me, too. My path was paved in 7th, when I was promoted to Private First Class (PFC). Victor Svec and I started our 8th grade year as 2nd lieutenants in the Band, under 1st lieutenant Jay Kershaw. We had no captain at first because Maj disliked Jay. Eventually, Jay got on Maj's good side and got a promotion. I was elevated to 1st lieutenant. I don't remember who took my place as 2nd. As a commissioned officer, I was a power-mad bastard. I would 'stick on' anybody for anything. The poor devils I oversaw in our big Allan Bldg dorm hall, not to mention my roommates, hated me. It's amazing I didn't end up at the bottom of Bugsy's pond. When the year ended, Maj called me into his office and announced that I would've been 'officer of the year' (instead of Doug Ross) had I been 'more consistent', whatever that meant. The whole officer thing proved quite a learning experience leading to an epiphany - I never wanted to be that way again. I turned a bit bohemian the following year, my last as a boarder.

Bohemian wouldn't be the word I would use, Fred, given that you signed up to room with Bosco in 10th grade.

Obviously you still hate me for abandoning you with Bosco sophomore year. How WAS your experience with the big boy? Inquiring minds want details . . .
